I was running a yum update and my WAN went down. Now I get this error when trying to run it again.
    [root@elastix ~]# yum update
    Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Existing lock /var/run/yum.pid: another copy is running as pid 17490.
Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
    The other application is: yum
    Memory : 29 M RSS ( 71 MB VSZ)
    Started: Tue Oct 26 17:42:01 2010 - 07:24 ago
    State : Sleeping, pid: 17490

    I see this: rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5 Oct 26 17:42 yum.pid

    Can I just delete it?

    Thanks.

Did you verify that the process wasn't still running somewhere first?

    ps aux |grep yum

Just a good idea to make sure it's not out there somewhere still.

    [root@elastix ~]# ps aux | grep yum
    root 10879 0.0 0.0 4008 680 pts/0 S+ 22:11 0:00 grep yum
    [root@elastix ~]#

Perfect. That just means that the only thing running on your server with the name "yum" in it is the command you just ran. I was HIGHLY unlikely that you had anything else out there, but stranger things have happened and you don't want to go removing a lock for a running process.
