    I just upgraded my smartphone from a windows mobile to Android (Samsung I9000)

    now I can't listen to my voicemail attachments in the email as Android doesn't have the u-law codec that asterisk uses on the .wav file that is attached.

    Can I change the codec or attachment type to mp3?

    Thanks

    It never fails that as soon as you post something you find the answer :)

    change /etc/asterisk/vm_general.inc

    format=wav49|wav
    to
    format=wav|wav49|gsm

    then execute in an asterisk cli
    module reload app_voicemail.so

    sent myself a test voicemail and it worked!

    I know this is an older post, but GSM worked with your android phone? I can't get wav or gsm to playback on my G2.

    I stand corrected. Wav works, but wav49 and gsm don't.

    If you're trying to playback a voicemail that was recorded prior to the codec change, it will not automatically convert to the new format. Try the suggested values and wait for a new voicemail to arrive, and then try it with your Android phone.

    Right, I understand that.

    The default is obviously wav49, which didn't work. I tried gsm and left myself a VM, which also didn't work. Putting wav first and retesting worked.

    I sure wish there was an easy way to use mp3.

    Thanks for the input.
