I have set up some virtual fax/extensions by following the instructions in "Elastix Without Tears". The extensions seem to be working for the most part, but I am getting strange entries in the elastix log (full). About once per minute there are the following messages:
    [Jun 10 08:43:18] NOTICE[8672] chan_iax2.c: Restricting registration for peer '7000' to 60 seconds (requested 300)
    [Jun 10 08:44:07] NOTICE[8673] chan_iax2.c: Peer '7000' is now UNREACHABLE! Time: 3
    [Jun 10 08:44:13] NOTICE[8673] chan_iax2.c: Restricting registration for peer '7000' to 60 seconds (requested 300)
    [Jun 10 08:44:18] NOTICE[8673] chan_iax2.c: Peer '7000' is now REACHABLE! Time: 1

I noticed that the fax extensions "gray" out for a few seconds in the flash operator panel, which is why i started digging around in the logs. I'm assuming this is not desired behavior? Any ideas what might be causing this?

    Thanks,
    Ron

    davidh,
Yes, I set up the iax extension and then created a virtual fax using that extension under the fax tab. I am able to send and receive faxes, not totally reliably yet though. I don't know if this is why or not. The extension stays "reachable" for about a minute and then says unreachable for some seconds.

I forgot to mention, so it's probably a key issue :), that the fax iax extensions are requesting a 300 second registration time when they register. Elastix is denying that and granting 60 seconds. Could it be that the iax extensions are still assuming that they have 300 seconds so are not re-registering until after elastix says "hey where are you?" after 60 seconds? Why would the iax extensions be requesting 300 seconds if it's not allowed in elastix?

    thanks,
    ron

Yes, I too am seeing this.
    Code:

Restricting registration for peer '5002' to 60 seconds (requested 300)

I am getting this every minute for the Virtual fax extension 5002. Elastix v1.5.2-2.3 with all the latest patches - Asterisk v1.4.26, etc.

    edit your

    /etc/iaxmodem/iaxmodem-cfg.ttyIAX*

    files appropriately

Ideally, also edit your FreePBX modem extension's iax2 port to reflect port= <value> in those files

Even better is to put into iax.conf into the general section a high value for maxregexpire like:
    maxregexpire=3600

This is because if you make any changes to the virtual modems the /etc/iaxmodem/iaxmodem-cfg.ttyIAX* files get overwritten
