Has anyone done any tests to determine which is more reliable?

the 2 solutions are not comparable...are totally different aproaches...
freepbx is t38 native app_fax from asterisk (whis is free to 1 channel only, from more than 1 fax at a time you have to pay a channel based fee to digium...) but i ve made transmissions of faxes over a 44kbps old analog dial up modem at 2400bps reliably..(1 page send in 10 minutes) but send ok...
iaxmodem and hyla in the other hand does not support t38 so that scenario would never be possible but is far more flexible for send and receive over good quality lines and its open source / free software

    see ya
