Looks like you did something wrong while updating your config file. Possible reason might be that you have added extra ";" or missed it unintentionally. Try running op_server.pl as standalone program, probably it will give a clue.

every line that doesn't execute is a blank line, and there are a lot of "r"'s where they shouldn't be

I suggest that you edited the amportal.conf file with a non unix editor, I suggest you do it over with an editor that understands unix text files and doesn't stomp on them . (vi included with elastix, or you can "yum install mc" from bash, it gives you both mc (midnight commander" and mcedit (a text editor which is a bit of mc that is easier for some to understand)
.
Unix/linux new line = \\n (new line), carriage return = \\r (goes to the start of the line currently on)
apple new line = \\r (carriage return)
windows/dos new-line = \\r\\n (new line, carriage return)

who's right? you might ask., Unix did it first and makes perfect logical sense to me, tele-types are long gone, as are IBM "golfballs" , oh well the arrogance of "johnny-come-lately's" . . .

For editing your files you may also want to have a look at WinSCP it has not hosed any of my files yet. http://winscp.net it's free and easy to use and there is even a portable version for your key ring.
One of the nice things it does is makes a backup of any files you edit (which you should do anyway) so you don't have to remember.
