New Elastix product oriented towards Call Centers?!

As you may remember, together with Elastix 1.0 we launched the first version of our Call Center module. This is an innovative module that allows for campaign management for inbound and outbound traffic. It also includes a predictive dialer licensed entirely under GPL. Som people believe this is the best, most usable Open Source Call Center project to date!!

Now, a few days ago some people have asked us why we have launched the Call Center functionality as a post-install plug-in module instead of including it directly in the Elastix ISO? This way, the Call Center functions would be ready to use out of the box. This new version of "Elastix Call Center Edition" ISO could also include improvements for some call center business processes as well as specific patches to Asterisk or any other development that would be useful for your businesses.

However, this would mean to maintain two different versions of Elastix: the regular version, and the Call Center version. We are still thinking which path to take. However, as always, you would be the ones deciding. So please let us know your opinion.

Why I think it is better to integrate the module into Elastix is that, just like other features, if users do not need it then they will not enable it. Pretty simple. There are tons of other features in Elastix such as the current implementation of fax that a lot of users do not use for various reasons. Some do not need it while some like myself personally deem it not feasible in its current implementation that requires static IPs for the networked computers and having to install clients on each computer, imagine if you have quite a number of computers to manage static IPs on. Avantfax web-based fax will be the best option that will cause more and more people to adopt and make Elastix an even greater hit with more followers coming from other other solutions. Another feature a lot of people do not need and/or use in Elastix for various reasons as well is the Email server. My personal reason is that email servers do continuous intense work all day and night and should not be on a phone system sharing or taking up resources that the phone system itself needs. I am a network admin and deal with email servers everyday so I know how much resources they need, in fact on server performance reports, email servers side is one of those that take up most memory and CPU resources on a server than any other system process hence I don't use the Elastix email server. So for this simple reason (I say integrate the Cal Center module into Elastix) as; if users don't need it, then they won't enable it, I say its best to have it all in one package rather than modules that users have to then compile, install and possibly have varying results to deal with. The same can be done for the Call Center module.

I personally do not own or run a call center, (YET) but am in the works of laying the foundation. I am wanting to build a small outsource call center, were my employees would work from home using there own highspeed internet, computer etc. Since I seen this posting I thought I should express a feature/function that I have yet to find developed for Asterisk. (other than a sip client) For work at home agents trying to setup SIP clients was really bad outcome when 8 of my friends and myself created a test senerio, the sound was choppy or the call was lost. If the agent called in using a land line and logged to take calls the quality was smooth for every one of us. What I would like to try to have developed in like a sip client, but web based (runs local on the sip server) that would let the agent place calls on hold, transfer ect from the web base tool.
