Sending and receiving faxes with Elastix

Author: Manzurek

instructions not useful for latest elastix version (CAO GIO!)

Objective

To use Elastix’s Hylafax for sending (from any PC) and receiving faxes (by e-mail in PDF)

Installation of Elastix

Simply insert the CD, follow the steps and it’s done (without further comment).

After the installation is complete, enter with the root user and use the netconfig command to point the IP address to our server. Then reboot the server with the service network restart command and that should be it. Now we can access it via the Web from any PC with the Firefox browser (user: admin, password: palosanto)

Now in the tab: System → Configuration PBX → Extensions

Let's create an extension IAX2

:fax_setup_1.gif

After the extension is created, go to the tab: Fax → New Virtual Fax

:fax_setup_2.gif

  • Name of virtual fax: Name of the company
  • Email destination: E-mail address where the fax will arrive
  • Extension of the fax (IAX): The same number of the extension that was created previously
  • Secret (IAX): The same secret that was created previously for the extension IAX

Now we can receive faxes by e-mail. To send faxes from our PC (with Windows), download the client:

http://winprinthylafax.sourceforge.net

And once we configure it, we are almost ready to be able to send faxes.

For PCs to have permission to send faxes

Finally, enter the Elastix server via the console (see note at end) and go to the directory:

cd /var/spool/hylafax/etc

where we edit the file hosts.hfaxd that’s located at:

localhost
127.0.0.1

Now add the IP address to our Elastix server and the IP addresses of the PCs where we will install Winprinthylafax.

That’s it. Now faxes can be sent and received.

Note: In Elastix version 0.8.4 and beyond, it’s no longer necessary to enter through the console; it can be done from the Web interface in the menu “Fax → Fax Clients”.
